I live in North Carolina, which means I'm smack dab in the middle of the daisy chain of shallow south shaming: Virginia likes to denigrate North Carolina, which likes to take it out on South Carolina. Sometimes it reminds me of South Park's Human CentiPad. Lately, with Mark Sanford returning to elected office in SC, and with the insanity that is the Republican-led NC legislature (who briefly entertained a bill calling for Christianity to be established as the state religion), Virginia's trans-vaginal ultrasound bill, ultimately signed into law by Governor Bob McDonnell after it was modified to require 'merely ' a mandatory ultrasound for pregnant woman seeking abortions, looks like a quaint relic.
But Virginia has not relinquished its competitive spirit in the race to the bottom: lieutenant governor nominee E.W. Jackson has proclaimed yoga to be satanic.
No, you cannot make this stuff up. A quote from the devoutly Christian Jackson: "Beware of systems of spirituality which tell you to empty yourself. You will end up filled with something you probably do not want" I wonder if any of the victims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests and ministers of all Christian varieties can relate to this experience.
Here's a great take on the issue at Wonkette.
